Let’s be honest: most gift cards are pretty disappointing. They’re usually plastic, tied to one brand, and end up forgotten in a wallet (or worse, tossed after one use). Even digital gift cards aren’t much better because they still lock you into a single store. It’s a low-effort gift that often feels like a low-effort gift.
At On Me, we wanted to shape the future of gifting. Instead of picking a brand, you gift by interest- like tennis, baking, or hiking- and the recipient gets to spend across multiple brands they’ll actually want. Plus, On Me gift cards can easily be added to your Apple or Google Wallet for a seamless experience. It’s flexible, thoughtful, and something people are excited to both give and receive.
As the founding designer, I helped take On Me from concept to launch ****by leading the design of our web and mobile experiences and shaping the brand. Over the course of a year, I worked closely with our CEO, CTO, and founding engineer to ensure design played a key role in finding product-market fit.
I led the 0→1 design of On Me with a focus on usability, conversion, and brand differentiation. Since we were building everything from scratch, every decision — from UX flows to button labels to color palettes- had to be intentional. We relied on a combination of Microsoft Clarity session recordings, dashboard metrics, usability testing, and plenty of informal feedback from friends and family. Some insights came from formal research, but many came from immediate, real-time gut checks that helped us quickly iterate. Here’s how we shaped the product:
On Me needed a site that didn’t just exist, but actually convinced people to buy and send gift cards. Our homepage introduced the concept of an On Me gift card as a digital gift card for hobbies and interests, while the product detail pages go into further detail about each interest-specific gift card. After plenty of iterations (and ongoing tweaks), we landed on designs that educated and enticed users without overwhelming them.
